Cyprus is known in ancient Greek mythology as the birthplace of Aphrodite. Worship of the goddess, also known as Venus, has persisted to this day as a theme in Western art. Andreas Araouzos, director of the Alpha Square Theatre in Nicosia, conceived of ‘Venus: Amorous and Savage’ as a meditation on a figure who provokes both intense love and searing pain. The one-hour production combines readings from a wide range of authors (from Homer to Arthur Rimbaud to Milan Kundera to Sam Shepard) with performances of contemporary love songs (including well-known works by the likes of Sam Hunt, Giorgos Perris, Jewel, and Elton John). Beautifully staged and lit, the show features singer Herodotos Miltiadous and actors Alexia Paraskeva and Andreas Araouzos. This free performance takes place on the terrace of Armonia Bar. Join us on 28 October at 18:30 for a powerful evocation of the legacy of Aphrodite.
